England: Man jailed for failing to attend inquest in first-of-its-kind prosecution
A man has been jailed for four months for failing to give evidence at an inquest in a legal first.
Duncan Lawrence, 60, was a consultant at a London care home where 19-year-old Sophie Bennett took her own life in May 2016.
He was fined £650 in May for failing to attend the inquest into her death and the matter was subsequently referred to police.
Mr Lawrence pleaded guilty to withholding evidence/documentation in relation to a coroner’s inquest and was sentenced at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The case is believed to be the first prosecution of its kind.
