England: Record number of ethnic minority barristers to become QCs
A record number of ethnic minority lawyers in England and Wales will be promoted to the ranks of Queen’s Counsel today, The Brief reports.
A total of 18 ethnic minority barristers will be promoted to QC following 33 applications, an increase of two on the 16 successful barristers of 37 applicants in the previous round.
The current round will also see the second-highest number of women promoted since the promotion system was briefly suspended in 2004.
A total of 32 women will be promoted following 50 applications, up from 31 women and 56 applications in the last round.
The promotions – totalling 119 new silks, six more than the last round – will be announced today by Queen’s Counsel Appointments.
