NI: Facebook settles with 14-year-old girl in ‘revenge porn’ case
Social media giant Facebook has reached a confidential settlement with a 14-year-old girl who sued the company after a nude photograph of her was posted on the platform, the High Court in Belfast has heard.
As well as suing the man alleged to have posted the photo, she sued the social media company, claiming damages for misuse of private information, negligence and breach of the Data Protection Act 1998.
Lawyers for the girl said the photo was posted several times between November 2014 and January 2016 and Facebook should have been able to use an image recognition process to prevent its republication.
Her barrister, Edward Fitzgerald QC, instructed by McCann and McCann Solicitors, told Mr Justice Paul Maguire yesterday that the case had been settled with Facebook, the Belfast Telegraph reports. He added that Facebook would pay her legal costs.
