Family lawyer Claire Edgar discusses trauma at NI Science Festival 2024
Family lawyer Claire Edgar joined a panel discussion on “trauma insensitive systems” at this year’s NI Science Festival.
Ms Edgar, a partner at Francis Hanna & Co Solicitors, was joined by a group of professionals in the areas of neuroscience, psychology and justice to discuss the challenges survivors of domestic violence face when navigating the justice system.
The discussion, titled ‘Where’s the justice? The impact of trauma insensitive systems’, was organised in collaboration with Women’s Aid and billed as “a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand and the collaborative efforts to support survivors”.
Speaking after the event, Ms Edgar said: “I was delighted to be invited to contribute to the NI Science Festival’s panel discussion on the area of trauma.
“As a family lawyer, I firmly believe that recognising the impact of trauma in our family courts is crucial for ensuring fair and just outcomes for those navigating the legal system and particularly for survivors of domestic violence.
“I really enjoyed the opportunity to engage with a wealth of expertise in this area and to advocate for more empathetic and trauma-informed approaches within our family courts.”
