First hearings held at Cork's €34 million new courthouse

Court hearings were held in Cork’s new €34 million courthouse yesterday after a series of delays.

The new six-courtroom complex on Anglesea Street was delivered as part of the €135 million public-private partnership deal struck in late 2015.

It was originally set to be completed by December 2017 but delays meant it was not completed until earlier this year.

The low-key opening of the courthouse yesterday confused at least one accused who was set to appear before the court.

A client of solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher turned up at the temporary courthouse at Washington Street instead of the new complex, the Irish Examiner reported, but eventually made it to the right place.

The courthouse will have an official opening ceremony attended by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan on Monday 28 May.
