First summons due under new court fines regime
Individuals who failed to pay fines imposed last year will begin to be summoned to court, the Courts Service of Ireland has confirmed.
The Irish Examiner reports that District Court judges will begin issuing rulings and sanctions on defaulters under the regime created by the Fines (Payment and Recovery) Act 2014 for the first time.
The legislation came into effect on January 2016 and allows people to pay fines by instalment over a 12-month period.
The law is designed to improve collection rates and reduce the number of people imprisoned for the non-payment of fines.
More than €35.5 million in fines imposed since 2013 remains unpaid.
However, the Courts Service said collection rates were improving.
