Five new judges will not sit on High Court bench until November
Five senior barristers who were nominated last month for appointment as High Court judges will not sit on the bench until November at the earliest, the president of the High Court has said.
Caroline Biggs SC, Marguerite Bolger SC, Emily Egan SC, Cian Ferriter SC and David Holland SC were nominated in September to take up the new seats on the High Court bench created through legislation earlier this summer.
Ms Justice Mary Irvine, president of the High Court, said on Friday that assumptions that the judges would be in place for the beginning of the new legal year today “have proven to be misplaced”, The Irish Times reports.
The delay in the five nominees receiving their warrants of appointment has led to the cancellation of a “substantial amount” of trials and hearings due to take place in October.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said it “is working with the other State actors involved to ensure the nominees can be formally appointed as quickly as possible”.
