Flanagan expected to propose judicial appointments within weeks
Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan is expected to propose new appointments to the Court of Appeal bench this week following a public plea from the court’s president, The Irish Times reports.
About this case:
- Judgment:
Shortly after being sworn in, Mr Justice George Birmingham called for urgent appointments to address the long waiting time for appeals.
He described vacancies on the bench as an “immediate crisis”.
In a separate intervention, he told the court that he would have difficult finding three judges proficient in the Irish language for a certain appeal as he already has “difficulty finding three judges to speak English”.
Mr Flanagan is now likely to propose appointments in the coming weeks, which could lead to a row with Cabinet colleagues.
Transport Minister Shane Ross, a member of the Independent Alliance which is junior partner in coalition with Mr Flanagan’s Fine Gael party, has previously sought to block the appointment of judges until the judicial appointments process is reformed.
Mr Ross is a major cheerleader of the Government’s controversial Judicial Appointments Bill, which passed the Dáil last week but is now unlikely to be agreed by both Houses of the Oireachtas by the summer.
