Former Attorney General Peter Sutherland passes away
Ireland’s former Attorney General Peter Sutherland has passed away at the age of 71.
Mr Sutherland, born in Dublin, held several high-ranking political, business and diplomatic roles over the course of his career.
As well as serving as Attorney General of Ireland from 1981–84, he was European commissioner for competition policy from 1985–89; founding director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO); and chairman of Goldman Sachs International from 1995–2015.
He was appointed in 2006 the United Nations special representative for international migration and held that post until his death.
Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said: “I have known Peter Sutherland for many decades and have borne witness to his vast capabilities in myriad roles. Most recently, when Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, I met Peter on a number of occasions to discuss the migration crisis. He displayed immense passion and compassion as the UN SG’s Special Envoy on Migration and, despite ill health, he worked tirelessly in his final years to address the plight of displaced people.
“Peter was dedicated to his family and I extend my sincere condolences to Maruja, Shane, Natalia and Ian, his wider family and his wide circle of friends around the world.
“Peter will be remembered by history as one of the greatest ever Irishmen. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
