Former chief justice Frank Clarke in surprise return to the Bar
Former chief justice Frank Clarke has raised eyebrows with reports that he will resume practice as a barrister.
Mr Clarke held the top judicial post from 2017 until October, when he was succeeded by Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell.
He will not be allowed to practice before the Irish courts and intends to focus on arbitration and mediation, according to The Irish Times – though he could, if he wanted, argue cases before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
A spokesperson for the Bar Council told the newspaper that Mr Clarke had joined the Law Library “just like anyone else”.
“It is a matter of policy for the Bar of Ireland not to comment on the individual practice of a particular member,” they added.
