Former librarian turned law PhD student shines spotlight on Irish censorship of books
A former librarian turned PhD candidate at University of Birmingham Law School has used Twitter to shine a light on Ireland’s history of censorship.
Alana Farrell, from Portlaoise, has been tweeting since Monday about the history of Ireland’s Censorship of Publications Board to coincide with Banned Books Week.
The PhD candidate, whose work is focused on examining abortion information restrictions in Ireland, was caught off-guard by the popularity of her Twitter thread, which she plans to finish on Saturday.
Ms Farrell told Irish Legal News: “The history of the book is a huge passion of mine. When I saw that it was Banned Books Week I thought I’d share a bit of what I know and have read about censorship in Ireland.
“It is a fascinating area of our history and I hope, long term, to contribute to the discussion of its legacy. Until then, I figured why not do a mega-thread on Twitter?”
Banned Books Week was initiated by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1982 and is now marked in a number of countries in the last week of September.
