Former registrar of solicitors to take up role in surveyors’ regulator
John Elliot, who retired from the Law Society of Ireland last year, has been appointed as chairperson of the appeals board of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI).
Mr Elliot was director of regulation and registrar of solicitors at the Law Society until his early retirement last year, having spent nearly two decades at the solicitors’ body.
He has been appointed to the SCSI post by Darragh O’Brien, the minister for housing, local government and heritage.
Under the Building Control Act 2007, quantity surveyors and building surveyors must be registered with the SCSI.
A person adversely affected by a decision of the SCSI’s admissions board, technical assessment board or professional conduct committee may appeal to the appeals board against the decision.
The legislation requires the chairperson of the appeals board to be a solicitor, a barrister or a former judge of the Circuit Court, High Court or Supreme Court.
Writing on LinkedIn, Mr Elliot said: “I am looking forward to using my experience of 18 years as registrar of solicitors in this post.”
