Former solicitor admits €300,000 fraud offences
A former solicitor has admitted theft, fraud and forgery offences worth a total loss of more than €300,000.
Mark Cronin, formerly of Cronin Mungovan Solicitors in Macroom, pleaded guilty to a long string of offences dating from between July 2009–December 2013.
Mr Cronin was struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal in 2013 in connection with nine instances of misconduct, including four related to misappropriation of funds from clients.
Mr Cronin’s former legal partner, Clare Mungovan, was completely exonerated of involvement at the time.
Appearing in Cork Circuit Court, Mr Cronin admitted stealing €24,000 in cash from the solicitor firm’s offices, drawing a €100,000 cheque from an account with insufficient funds, and altering a bank draft reading €223,500 to read €333,500.
He also admitted deceiving another person into lodging €48,500 into a VAT account for personal gain, three further counts of theft, and the alteration of another bank draft.
Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin asked for the total loss attributed to the offences and was advised it was over €300,000.
Sentencing in the case has been deferred to 23 November.
