Four judicial appointments agreed at final Cabinet meeting of the year
Four appointments to the Court of Appeal, High Court, Circuit Court and District Court benches have been agreed by the Government at its final meeting of the year.
Mr Justice David Binchy, who was appointed to the High Court in 2014, has been nominated for elevation to the Court of Appeal to fill the vacancy created by the elevation of Ms Justice Marie Baker to the Supreme Court.
Fellow solicitor Colm Roberts has been nominated for appointment to the District Court to fill the vacancy created by the elevation of Ms Justice Rosemary Horgan to the Circuit Court.
In anticipation of imminent vacancies, ministers also agreed in principle to nominate two further individuals for appointment to the bench.
Paul Burns SC, who studied at Trinity College Dublin before calling to the Bar in 1986 and to the Inner Bar in 2004, will be nominated for appointment to the High Court to fill the vacancy left by Mr Justice Binchy.
Cork barrister Helen Boyle, who called to the Bar in 1996, will be nominated for appointment to the Circuit Court to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Ms Justice Susan Ryan in January.
The Government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Michael D. Higgins of the nominations in accordance with the Constitution.
