Frances Fitzgerald to study calls for Gsoc law reform
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald will be “studying in detail” the calls for legislative reform by Gsoc chairperson Judge Mary Ellen Ring.
Judge Ring told members of the Oireachtas justice committee that legislative changes would allow Gsoc to function more effectively and fairly.
She also called for legislation allowing Gsoc to apply to the courts for an order directing gardaí to provide information to the Ombudsman.
The Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland has similar powers.
Ms Fitzgerald’s spokesperson told the Irish Examiner: “The Tánaiste is aware of the chairperson’s general views on the legislation which governs the manner in which Gsoc operates, but will be studying in detail the remarks made by the chairperson to the committee.
“All legislation, including in relation to the GSOC, is kept under review.”
