Francesca Albanese to deliver Northern Ireland lecture
Francesca Albanese, one of the leading UN experts on Palestine, is to deliver Amnesty International Northern Ireland’s annual lecture next week.
Ms Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, will speak about the findings of her latest report, Genocide as Colonial Erasure.
Her report finds that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Israel has committed acts of genocide in Gaza and calls for the international community to “intervene now to prevent new atrocities that will further scar human history”.
The online event, chaired by Amnesty Northern Ireland director Patrick Corrigan, will be available to view free as part of the NI Human Rights Festival.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mr Corrigan said: “Francesca Albanese is one of the most important voices of our time.
“Despite attacks on her personally and professionally, she has courageously used her role to shine a spotlight on the mass atrocities being perpetrated against Palestinian civilians.
“The world must urgently heed her calls for humanity to prevail. We are delighted to host her for this year’s Amnesty lecture to amplify her voice in speaking truth to power.”
The event on Tuesday 3 December, 6pm, is free but registration is necessary via Eventbrite.
