Frank Buttimer tops criminal legal aid table for 2015

Cork solicitor Frank Buttimer remains Ireland’s top-earning free criminal legal aid solicitor, the Department of Justice has confirmed.

Mr Buttimer earned €548,449 in 2015, down from €709,668 in 2014. He was the only legal aid solicitor to earn more than half a million euros.

The other top-earning criminal legal aid solicitors last year were:

  • Michael J. Staines - €454,611

  • Cahir O’Higgins - €454,173

  • Michael Hennessy - €429.492

  • Edmund J. Burke - €348,311

  • John M. Quinn - €340,601

  • Kenneth Cunningham - €339,480

  • John E. Feaheny - €318,890

  • Ronald J. Lyham - €309,021

  • Yvonne Bambury - €307,920

    • The Department of Justice is currently preparing legislation to transfer the criminal legal aid system to the Legal Aid Board, and introduce powers to secure contributions from defendants, more rigorous means testing and stronger sanctions against abuses.
