Free CPD event to explore O’Keeffe v Ireland a decade on
A free CPD webinar on the implications of the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in the O’Keeffe v Ireland case will take place on Thursday.
The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission is hosting the online event, which will examine the implications of the ruling on the right of redress for survivors of child sexual abuse in day schools prior to 1991/1992.
More than a decade on from the landmark ruling, many survivors of historic child sexual abuse in primary and secondary schools have not yet received redress from the State.
The Commission is pushing for the immediate roll out of a fair, non-discriminatory and accessible State redress scheme that fully implements the ECtHR’s judgment.
In the meantime, survivors continue to come forward to seek information on their legal options, including their right to redress, most recently following the publication of the report of the scoping inquiry into historical sexual abuse in schools run by religious orders.
The CPD webinar for legal practitioners on Thursday 7 November, 4.30pm-6pm, will hear from Professor Conor O’Mahony of the UCC Child Law Clinic, Colin Smith SC and the Commission’s senior solicitor Áine Bhreathnach.
Those who wish to attend have been asked to RSVP by Monday 4 November to rsvp@ihrec.ie. One CPD point will be available for attendance.
