Gardaí can now fine Northern Ireland residents for Covid-19 breaches
Gardaí can fine residents of Northern Ireland for making non-essential trips south of the border under new regulations now in effect.
Residents of Northern Ireland were previously able to avoid punishment if stopped by gardaí under Covid-19 regulations, but will now have their name and address taken and a €100 fixed-charge penalty issued to their address.
If offenders do not pay the penalty within the required 28 days, a court summons will be issued to their address as usual.
Gardaí hope the new powers will act as a deterrent and will not require to be used, The Irish Times reports.
