Gardaí investigating alleged racist attack against PhD researcher

Gardaí have opened an investigation into an alleged racist attack against a PhD researcher at UCD Sutherland School of Law.
A video circulated on social media appears to show Xuedan (Shelly) Xiong being pushed by a group of young men into the Royal Canal near Ashtown in Dublin.
She made a statement to gardaí following the incident on Friday 14 August and the matter is now being actively investigated, RTÉ reports.
In a statement, UCD Sutherland School of Law said representatives including Professor Imelda Maher, Dean of UCD Sutherland School of Law had been in touch to offer their support.
It added: “UCD Sutherland School of Law would like to reiterate that we, through our research and teaching, continue to provide an environment for our diverse student body where everyone belongs and shares in its academic mission.”
