Garda review to consider separation of policing and security
The upcoming review of An Garda Síochána will be asked to recommend whether Ireland should set up a security service, The Irish Times reports.
The Government has said a “root-and-branch review” is necessary in the wake of revelations about wrongful convictions in the District Court.
The draft terms of reference for the independent inquiry include the question of whether policing and security should be separated, creating an MI5-style security service independent of An Garda Síochána.
The move has been opposed by Garda in the past.
Ms Fitzgerald will meet opposition parties to agree the scope of the inquiry before bringing it to Cabinet next week.
