Gardaí strike could have significant impact on the courts
A planned strike by gardaí could create a backlog in Ireland’s courts, senior counsel have told The Irish Times.
Vincent Heneghan SC warned that the effect of a strike would be “hugely significant”.
Civil cases are likely to proceed as normal except where Garda presence is required, such as in certain family court cases.
However, criminal cases face delays due to the role of gardaí in giving evidence, liaising with witnesses and controlling physical evidence.
Mr Heneghan said he expected the strike to result in courts losing four days out of 20 in November.
He added: “That is hugely significant. There will also be cases adjourned and new cases coming into the system could be substantially delayed. The strike could create a clogging effect at the District Court.”
A spokesman for the Courts Service of Ireland said it is discussing the logistics with the judiciary and An Garda Síochána.
