NI: Gardai to be deployed at border crossings if Britain leaves EU with no deal
Senior police in Ireland are drafting plans to deploy hundreds of gardai to the border should there be a no-deal Brexit on March 29, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
The plans were discussed yesterday in Dublin, between Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and senior staff, it is understood.
Sources revealed that 600 gardai will be needed at the 300 crossings along the frontier if the UK fails to reach a deal as it leaves the EU.
They would work alongside 400 customs staff who will be in place as part of the Republic’s no deal preparations.
It is also thought that there will be a directive from Garda HQ seeking volunteers to man the border crossings.
Mr Harris has pointed out that there are worries dissident republicans and criminal gangs already operating in the area will attempt to exploit the arrangements.
