Good response to Lawyers for Choice meeting in Dublin

Up to 40 pro-choice lawyers responded to a call to get organised ahead of an anticipated referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

Lawyers for Choice, part of the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment, aims to “create opportunities for lawyers to participate in the campaign for reproductive justice in Ireland through public legal education and advocacy for law reform”.

At an open meeting last night, the group sought to agree a mission statement and plan new projects and activities with a legal theme.

Máiréad Enright, senior lecturer at Birmingham Law School, was one of three women who helped to facilitate last night’s meeting.

Ms Enright told Irish Legal News: “It went really well. About 35-40 people came, at short notice. Attendees were a good mix of students, academics, barristers, solicitors and legal executives.”

Another open meeting is set to take place later in the summer and lawyers interested in taking part have been encouraged to contact lawyers4choice@gmail.com to join the group’s mailing list.

Ms Enright said: “We are especially interested in hearing from people active in areas of practice which intersect with abortion law, including people working in health and constitutional law, asylum and immigration, criminal law, socio-economic rights and civil liberties.”
