Government fast tracks Garda recruitment
A new fast track Garda recruitment programme aims to recruit 800 gardaí next year and 3,200 on a phased bases over the next four years.
The recruitment programme takes into account the numbers of gardaí retiring over the period and is designed to bring the strength of the police service up to 15,000.
The decision to reverse the decline in Garda numbers followingGovernment cutbacks comes amid growing public concern over rising rural crime and high-profile gangland murders.
Gardaí numbers have dropped by 1,400 since 2010 and, in inner city Dublin where most of the killings in the feud between the Hutch and Kinahan criminal gangs have occurred, the numbers are down by more than 230.
