Government plans agencies shake-up to prosecute white collar crime
The Government is planning to grant extra powers, staff and a wider remit to the Office of Director of Corporate Enforcement following a series of collapsed court cases, the Irish Examiner reports.
It is part of a package of measures aimed at improving prosecutions for white collar crime, particularly following the collapse of the 127-day trial of former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Seán FitzPatrick.
The OCDE, under the Government proposals, would be rebranded as a special commission with a chief commissioner and various commissioners working on specific corporate governance areas.
The rebranded agency would also have more “autonomy” and “flexibility” than the OCDE as it presently stands.
Meanwhile, there would be a separate joint agency task force led by An Garda Síochána to investigate business and credit card fraud.
