High Court judge expresses concern over would-be jurors failing to show
A High Court judge has expressed concern over the number of people failing to show up after being summoned for jury service, The Irish Times reports.
Mr Justice Colm MacEochaidh reportedly said: “The legal system cannot function unless people do their civic duty.”
According to figures given in court, 37 of 104 people summonsed for jury service in the High Court last week and 35 of 102 people summonsed this week failed to turn up.
A spokesperson for the Courts Service of Ireland told Irish Legal News that the figures reflect a general trend.
Mr Justice MacEochaidh said non-attendance was an issue of “grave” concern to the court and reminded people that it is a criminal offence not to attend without reasonable excuse.
