Historic moment as solicitors strengthen north-south ties
The Law Society of Northern Ireland is now formally represented within the Law Society of Ireland for the first time in its century-long history.
Since 1921, five seats have been reserved on the Council of the Law Society of Ireland for representatives from its northern counterpart — but have never been filled.
That changed in mid-December when Darren Toombs, senior vice president of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, formally took up one of those seats for the first time.
“After a mere 103 years, on Friday 13th December 2024, I finally became the first Extraordinary Member from the ‘Northern Society’, to take a full seat at Council table in Blackhall Place in Dublin,” Mr Toombs wrote on LinkedIn.
“Even more momentous, there was a vote to be taken and I was able to fully participate in the process.
“Quite the day. Certainly one I will never forget.”
Mr Toombs has invited cross-jurisdictional firms and practitioners to get in touch “with issues that are in play in your cross-border practice that I might now raise at both Councils”.
