Ibrahim Halawa not yet released due to ‘paperwork delays’
Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa has still yet to be released from prison in Cairo due to paperwork delays, The Irish Times reports.
Mr Halawa was acquitted two weeks ago after four years of pre-trial detention and a major international campaign for his release.
The paperwork, which was not delivered to the prison yesterday as had been expected, is necessary to confirm Mr Halawa does not have any other outstanding warrants for his arrest in Egypt.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: “There remains a number of steps to be gone through before Ibrahim is able to depart Egypt, and the Irish authorities and Ibrahim’s legal representatives remain in ongoing contact with the Egyptian authorities on this process. The Government remains focused on ensuring that Ibrahim Halawa gets home as soon as possible.”
