Increased volume of data protection complaints in 2016
An increased volume of complaints were handled by the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), Helen Dixon, last year, according to her third annual report since taking office.
According to the report, the DPC concluded 1,438 complaints in 2016, up from 1,015 in 2015, which the DPC attributes to a growing awareness of and concern for data protection matters.
The report also highlights the intensive preparatory work in advance of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) entering force.
Speaking after the report’s publication, Ms Dixon said: “The data protection rights of individuals need to be vigorously defended in this increasingly digital era. 2016 was a year in which the Irish DPC challenged both public and private sector bodies to do better to protect the personal data of their customers and members of the public.
“Through guidance, inspections, enforcement and consultation, the DPC delivered real results in driving compliance with data protection law, ensuring individuals’ data protection rights are put at the centre of commercial and public projects.
“This increased output from the DPC has been made possible by the expanded resources of the office and the increased number of skilled staff. The next 12 months are about preparing both the office and regulated entities for the General Data Protection Regulation, which will drive accountability for - and regulation of - data protection to a new level.”
