International experts launch UCC School of Law’s Centre for Children’s Rights and Family Law

Professor Ursula Kilkelly, Dean of the School of Law, told Irish Legal News that the launch of the new centre “represents a wonderful opportunity to consolidate and highlight the work being undertaken here in the fields of children’s rights and family law”.

She added: “UCC is home to a number of leading scholars, whose work is pushing boundaries, domestically and internationally, across an impressive and diverse range of research areas.

“It is our ambition in Cork to promote the best and most impactful research on child rights and family law.”

Colleagues from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the US were among those taking part in two days of intensive children’s rights and family law workshops at the university, as well as UCC’s Fulbright professor Jonathan Todres, an international children’s rights expert.

The workshops were followed by a public lecture by Professor John Eekelaar yesterday evening, marking the centre’s official launch.

Professor Kilkelly said she was “honoured that Professor John Eekelaar, Adjunct Professor at the School of Law and internationally renowned family law scholar, could join us and share his wealth of expertise with not just those participating in the workshop but also the wider community through his public lecture on Family Law and Identity”.

She added: “We all at UCC look forward to strengthening relationships with colleagues and institutions around the world who are also undertaking research in areas that we are all passionate about.”
