Ireland and UK trainees make finals of international environmental moot court competition

Trainee solicitors from the Law Society of Ireland and the Institute of Professional Legal Studies (IPLS) have represented Ireland and the UK in the Florida finals of the prestigious Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition.
Organised by the Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy of Stetson University, the Stetson Moot Court Competition focuses on important global environmental challenges and has been bringing together law students from universities all over the globe since 1996.
The focus of this year’s competition, which took place from 9 to 12 April 2025, was the interaction between the protection of endangered species, the rights of indigenous peoples, and international trade law.
The Law Society of Ireland was represented by trainees Emily Davis, Isobel Kenny and Marcela Gonzalez.
The IPLS was represented by trainees Cathal Mullan, Rebecca Deans and Seán Scally.
Emily Davis of the Law Society of Ireland won the prize for seventh best oralist and Cathal Mullan of the IPLS won the prize for 10th best oralist.
The Law Society of Ireland team won the Spirit of Stetson award for their engagement, courtesy and interaction with the other teams in the competition.
The University of Chicago narrowly beat the University of the Philippines to be crowned the champions of this year’s competition.
The Law Society team was coached by T P Kennedy, director of education of the Law Society, and the IPLS team was coached by barrister Thomas Stewart.
