Ireland team triumphs in Lawyers’ Rugby World Cup
A team of Irish and Northern Ireland lawyers have triumphed in the Lawyers’ Rugby World Cup, beating title holders Scotland in the semi-final before going on to beat England in the final.
The all-Ireland team, sponsored by law firm William Fry and Dual Insurance Underwriters, included lawyers from Belfast, Dublin, Cork, London and Jersey.
David Jones, a partner in Tughans who plays for the Belfast-based rugby club Instonians, was captain of the team.
He represented Northern Ireland within the team alongside colleague Luke Thompson of Tughans and Instonians, Adam Ervine of Banbridge RFC and A&L Goodbody, and Fergus Gallagher, formerly of Instonians and working at Hogan Lovells in London.
After his team’s success, Mr Jones said: “This was the third Lawyers’ Rugby World Cup with Paris and Edinburgh hosting the first two events. As Scotland have held the title for two consecutive tournaments, it was a real challenge to spoil the hat trick.
“We had a quality pool of players to select from, the majority of whom are still playing senior All Ireland League rugby in the top divisions. We’re now hoping to build on this momentum and are planning some future ‘legal’ games alongside the 6 Nations.”
