Irish DNA database links over 130 people to crimes
Gardaí have linked over 130 people to recorded crimes since Ireland’s new DNA database became operational in November, the Irish Independent reports.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said more than 2,500 samples from individuals and 2,000 samples from crime scenes have been uploaded tot he database.
She added: “Even though it is early days for the Irish DNA database, the signs are positive that it will be invaluable in the fight against volume crime and has already begun to assist in redressing the balance between those involved in the commission of serious crime and the investigators tasked with building criminal prosecution cases against them.”
Officials believe they have potentially identified the perpetrators in 215 separate cases - including some serial offenders.
