Irish lawyer in US launches new scholarship for home island
An Irish lawyer who now practises in the United States is to launch a new scholarship to support students in her home of Arranmore.
Caroleann S. Gallagher, partner at Chicago-based Coogan Gallagher, told Donegal Daily that her firm will award an annual scholarship worth €3,000 to one Leaving Cert pupil of her former school on the island, Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada.
She said: “I’m so glad and happy that my firm and I can do something for the Gairmscoil because it’s had an incredible influence on me and my life.”
Ms Gallagher studied law at NUI Galway — now the University of Galway — with the support of her family.
“I was lucky when I went to college that my parents could support me but I realise this may not be the case for everyone,” she said.
“My idea behind the scholarship is that it will be a helping hand for someone’s first steps into their adult life.”
The inaugural recipient of the scholarship will be announced at the end of the 2023 school year.
