Irish team triumphs in Dubai negotiation competition
A team of trainee solicitors from the Law Society of Ireland have won the 7th Ad Hoc Negotiation Competition in Dubai.
Borbála Gyenge, Jennifer Maguire and Ruby Porter took first place in the competition, organised by ADR ODR International and the European Institute for Conflict Resolution (EICR).
A total of 18 teams from six countries took part in this year’s contest at the DIFC Academy, which culminated in a unique “desert safari”, where participants negotiated a dispute involving camels and modern technology.
As part of the immersive experience, students also explored Islamic architecture and hospitality by visiting the Ismaili Centre Dubai, the venue for the third round of the competition.
The judges included lawyers, business directors, conflict resolution specialists and mediators from India, Kenya, Pakistan, Greece, the USA, Switzerland, the UK, the UAE and Israel.
Competition director Ruhi Thakkar said: “This is the premier negotiation competition, immersing law and business students in a real-life experience.
“The title ‘Ad Hoc’ is relevant as teams only have 60 minutes to prepare. We’ve always aimed to create the most authentic environment possible.”
In taking first place, the Law Society team won a full scholarship for a widely-recognised civil/commercial mediation course, the title of civil/commercial mediator accredited by ADR ODR International, and a one-month online internship with ADR ODR International.
The runners-up were from National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur, while third place was jointly awarded to teams from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore.
There were also special mentions for the NLSIU team, which won best negotiation pair, and the NLU Jodhpur team, which won best negotiation phrase.
