Judge Catherine Staines presides over final District Court sitting
A newly promoted judge has paid tribute to the local profession before she takes up her new role.
Judge Catherine Staines presided over her final sitting of Tullamore District Court on Monday, the Offaly Express reports.
She has been elevated to the Circuit Court, having served 11 years on the District Court bench in Tullamore and Portlaoise.
“I really have enjoyed my time. I looked forward to coming in every day, new challenges every day. I’m going to miss everybody,” she said.
The judge said she hoped to encounter a similar standard of professionalism, courtesy and excellence in the Circuit Court.
Anne Marie Kelleher, of Byrne & O’Sullivan, Edenderry, said: “It’s a wonderful appointment and it’s one well deserved.”
She said Judge Staines was extremely professional and courteous to all lawyers and parties.
“You were very compassionate and you showed that compassion while still being very professional in applying the law and practising the law,” said the solicitor.
Inspector Kieran Keyes said on behalf of the gardai that Judge Staines was “extremely fair to all the garda members and to all the people who used this court”.
