Judge narrowly avoids soaking in Dublin court

A judge in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court narrowly avoided being soaked after a 20-year-old defendant tried to throw a glass of water at him.

Judge Patrick McCartan was sentencing Leon Murphy, 20, who admitted allowing himself to be carried in a stolen car in May 2015.

Mr Murphy became angry after Judge McCartan made a remark about his mother.

According to the Irish Independent, Judge McCaran said he had seen Mr Murphy’s mother, a recovering heroin addict, in the court building and thought she had been “all over the place”.

Mr Murphy then jumped out of the dock and attempted to throw a glass of water at the judge.

However, he was prevented from doing so because of a quick intervention by prison officers, a court garda, and the judge’s tipstaff, The Irish Times reports.

Mr Murphy was escorted out of court while continuing to shout abuse at the judge.

The case was adjourned to another court for sentencing before another judge.
