Judge Patrick McCartan steps down from Circuit Court
Judge Patrick McCartan of the Circuit Court has retired from the bench after a 19-year judicial career.
His departure earlier this month has only just been announced.
The former criminal defence solicitor was a founding partner of Dublin firm McCartan & Hogan Solicitors and was only the second solicitor to become a Circuit Court judge.
He also served as a TD for the Workers’ Party from 1987 until 1992, when he unsuccessfully stood as a candidate for Democratic Left.
Judge McCartan was subsequently appointed to the bench by the so-called “rainbow coalition” government in 1997.
