Judge questions prosecution over €16 theft
A judge has questioned the value of prosecuting a woman over the theft of goods worth a total of just €16.
Judge Mary Devins, sitting in Castlebar District Court, noted that around €1,600 will need to be spent on providing an interpreter for the case when it proceeds in September, the Connaught Telegraph reports.
Judge Devins asked Vincent Deane, the Mayo State Solicitor, for his views on the matter.
Mr Deane said: “If you say you are not going to prosecute, where do you draw the line?”
She proceeded to certify the services of an interpreter in the case.
