Judges failing to request licenses from convicted drivers
Legislative provisions requiring judges to request the licenses of drivers convicted of road traffic offences are not being implemented, The Irish Times reports.
Figures provided by the Department of Justice to Tommy Broughan TD show only 301 drivers’ licenses recorded in the month since section 22 of the Road Traffic Act 2016 was commenced, despite there being 1,068 convictions in that period.
In 17 District Courts, no licences were recorded at all.
Under the legislation, licence numbers must be recorded in court so the information can be sent to the Department of Transport.
The Road Safety Authority has said it will contact the Department regarding the issue of enforcement.
A spokesman for the Department of Justice told The Irish Times it was “too early to make a definitive statement as to the effectiveness or otherwise” of the legislation.
