Judges tipped for appointment as next president of High Court
Mr Justice Kevin Cross and Mr Justice George Birmingham are among the leading contenders for next president of Ireland’s High Court, The Irish Times reports.
The Government is set to announce the successor to Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, who retires this month, within the next few days.
Mr Justice Cross is a judge of the High Court and chaired the Referendum Commission for this Summer’s successful poll on equal marriage. He is thought to be the Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s favourite for the role.
Mr Justice Birmingham, a former government minister, is currently a judge of the Court of Appeal and a former judge of the High Court.
Mr Justice Frank Clarke of the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Paul Gilligan of the High Court, and Mr Justice Michael Peart of the Court of Appeal are also tipped for consideration in the unpredictable contest.
Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne of the Supreme Court and Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan of the Court of Appeal are the only women judges named by some sources in connection with the appointment.
Mr Justice Kearns is due to retire after six years in the post.
