Judicial Council publishes landmark reports on sentencing
Research on sentencing in domestic violence cases before the District Court and a report on the use of community-based sanctions have been published by the Judicial Council.
The publication of the reports is a milestone for the Judicial Council’s sentencing guidelines and information committee, which is tasked with drawing up a range of sentencing guidelines for particular offences.
Dr Niamh Maguire of South East Technological University (SETU) was commissioned to carry out research relating to sentencing in the District Court, and in particular in cases of relationship violence and abuse.
Her 164-page report also identified District Court judges’ views on the sentencing process in the District Court.
The Judicial Council’s sentencing guidelines and information committee has itself prepared a 26-page note on the use of community-based sanctions in Ireland.
Previous research commissioned by the committee found that plans to develop sentencing guidelines for Irish judges could be frustrated by a lack of sentencing data, particularly for cases dealt with at the District Court.
