NI: Labour waters down its pledge on abortion
The final version of Labour’s general election manifesto includes a watered-down pledge to work with the Northern Ireland Assembly on abortion.
A leaked draft of the election manifesto had said: “Labour will continue to ensure a woman’s right to choose a safe, legal abortion – and we will legislate to extend that right to women in Northern Ireland.”
The final document now reads: “Labour will continue to ensure a woman’s right to choose a safe, legal abortion – and we will work with the Assembly to extend that right to women in Northern Ireland.”
The original pledge had received a mixed reception, with pro-life campaigners claiming it would undermine devolution.
Grainne Teggart, Amnesty’s Northern Ireland campaigns manager, told the Belfast Telegraph: “Health and justice are devolved but it is a UK Government responsibility to fulfil its international human rights obligations. Abortion is a human rights and healthcare issue.
“The ongoing failure of the Assembly to legislate for abortion leaves the responsibility squarely with the Westminster Government.
“In recent weeks we have raised this issue with all main UK political parties and will be following up after the general election.”
