Law firms urged to take part in second Wear Red Day against racism

A number of law firms took part in last year’s inaugural Wear Red Day - as did the Department of Justice - and organisers are hoping they will take part again, with anti-racism now “more important than ever”.

Funds raised through the initiative will be used by the charity to continue to challenge racism by providing education resources, programmes and intercultural activities which support integration.

Garrett Mullan, co-ordinator of Show Racism the Red Card, told Irish Legal News: “According to European Network Against Racism Ireland, in 2016 there were 435 incidents of racism reported through its iReport system. So far in 2017, 450 reports have been made. With racist incidents on the increase, we need to equip children and adults alike with the knowledge and skills to address and deal with racism.

“We are calling on law firms and everyone in the legal profession to get on board with Wear Red Day and support our work. As well as wearing red, companies can organise fun staff activities such as running a keepie-uppie competition or holding a bake sale to help boost donations. All funds raised will go towards helping us raise awareness of racism and stamping it out for future generations.”

Show Racism the Red Card are encouraging participants to share their activities on social media using the hashtag #WRD17.
