Law Society: ‘Considerable investment’ needed to implement gardaí prosecution recommendations
The Law Society of Ireland has said that “considerable investment” would be required to implement proposals to dismantle the role of gardaí in court prosecutions, the Irish Examiner reports.
The Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland, which launched its final report last week, said the amount of time gardaí spend “in court of preparing for court is enormously wasteful of police resources”.
It recommended that gardaí should lose their role in decided what cases should be prosecuted, should no longer prosecute cases in court, and should be relieved of key functions in the coronial process.
A spokesperson for the Law Society said: “There is no doubt that some of the recommendations, in particular, would, if implemented, represent a very significant change and would inevitably require considerable investment by the State.
“The society is looking forward to carefully considering those recommendations and developing policy positions in due course.”
