Law Society names winners of Justice Media Awards 2016

The Law Society of Ireland yesterday announced the winners of its annual Justice Media Awards at a ceremony in Dublin.

The 2016 Justice Media Overall Award - given to the entry judged to be standing out from all the others - went to Frank Shouldice andLiam O’Brien of RTÉ Radio One, for their documentary, The Case That Never Was.

Other winners were as follows:

  • 2016 Justice Media Daily Newspapers Award: Fiachra O Cionnaith and Daniel McConnell of the Irish Examiner for their comprehensive, disturbing and hard-hitting investigation: Saving Grace – the story of ‘Service User 42’
  • 2016 Justice Media Sunday Newspapers Award: Dearbhail McDonald for her compelling Sunday Independent article:Medical negligence – a suitable case for treatment
  • 2016 Justice Media Regional Newspapers Award: Ann Murphy of the Evening Echo for her excellent series: The drugs question – what next?
  • 2016 Justice Media Court Reporting (Print) Award: Mark Tighe of the Sunday Times for his excellent and comprehensive article:What the jury didn’t hear
  • 2016 Justice Media Court Reporting (Broadcast) Award: Vivienne Traynor of RTÉ News for her reports: Satellite Gran
  • 2016 Justice Media Court Reporting (Digital) Award: Christina Finn of TheJournal.ie for her report: “My daughter is my life”: mother pleads with judge to return child from care
  • 2016 Justice Media National Radio Award: Frank Shouldice and Liam O’Brien of RTÉ Radio One, for their documentary: The Case That Never Was
  • 2016 Justice Media Local Radio Award: Jerry O’Sullivan and Miriam McGillycuddy for the regular slot on the Kerry Todayprogramme: The legal lowdown
  • 2016 Justice Media Television (News) Award: Ray Kennedy of RTÉ News for his superb series of reports: The battle for Gorse Hill – five days in March
  • 2016 Justice Media Television (Features and Documentaries) Award: Conor Ryan and John Cunningham of RTÉ Investigates for their formidable documentary: Standards in Public Office
  • 2016 Justice Media Digital/Online (News) Award: Ellen Coyne of The Times – Ireland edition for her powerful series: The criminalisation of the purchase of sex
  • 2016 Justice Media Digital/Online (Features) Award: Will Goodbody of rté.ie for his excellent analysis: “Safe Harbour” case – what is it and why should we care
  • Simon Murphy, president of the Law Society, said: “We believe it is vitally important to recognise, reward and encourage excellence in legal journalism. The media is crucial in trying to increase the public’s understanding of law and the legal system.

    “We must therefore strive for the highest standards possible. The investment of time, energy and resources in producing articles, programmes, investigations and research that help to inform and educate Irish citizens on justice and law is a very valuable investment.”

    He added: “The Justice Media Awards set extremely high standards. I would like to congratulate all of our winners today and I wish them continued success in their journalistic endeavours.”
