Lawyers to address Dublin meeting tackling immigration disinformation

Two lawyers will address a public meeting in Dublin city centre next week which aims to dispel “disinformation and misinformation” about asylum and immigration.

Barrister Cathal Malone and solicitor Wendy Lyon are among the speakers at the public townhall event taking place at the Teachers Club, Parnell Square next Wednesday 30 October 2024, 7pm-9pm.

Other speakers include Vuyokazi Njikelana of MASI, Amelia Melanson and Catarina Koch of CATU, and Igor Khmil, head coach of Smithfield Boxing Club.

Hosted by Ireland for All, the event is aimed at “providing accurate legal and factual information on the asylum process, immigration, housing and other important issues affecting society”.

“In the lead-up to the general election, which is rumoured to take place at the end of November, housing and immigration are consistently ranked as the issues most constituents care about,” the organisers said.

The community-oriented event is independent of any statutory agency and not affiliated with any political party, they stressed.

The event is supported by the Socialist Lawyers’ Association of Ireland (SLAI), Lawyers Against Racism, Le Chéile, CATU, IPSC and MASI.

It is intended to be the first in a series of events which will take place across the entire island of Ireland.
