Legal aid plea in Northern Ireland Bar’s programme for goverment response
Investment in legal aid is necessary to speed up the criminal justice system, the Bar of Northern Ireland has said in its response to the draft programme for government.
The Bar today published its 11-page submission to the consultation on the first programme for government following several years of political stalemate.
“To achieve ‘speedy justice’, there must be a diverse supply of legal professionals who apply their skills and expertise for the benefit of all citizens — not just those who can afford it — and are paid fairly and promptly,” it states.
“Therefore, the Bar of NI strongly asserts that a programme dedicated to speeding up justice should look at urgently stabilising and investing in the criminal justice system which should be the cornerstone of a safe and just society.
“We consider it essential that the Executive urgently address the looming risks associated with the retention and recruitment of the criminal Bar, and the remuneration of legal aid professionals, devising measures to make a tangible difference.”
The submission also comments on other aspects of the draft programme, including its aims to build a “globally competitive and sustainable” economy and to end violence against women and girls.
