Limerick conference to consider medical error and the healthcare profession
A conference hosted by University of Limerick (UL) this month will consider the civil, criminal and regulatory responses to medical error.
The day-long conference, co-hosted by the School of Law and the Graduate Entry Medical School, will hear from a range of medico-legal experts on key areas of the law.
The first panel will consider recent and ongoing developments in medical negligence litigation, hearing from Dr Ciaran Craven SC and Asim Sheihk, barrister and UCD assistant professor of medicine.
The second panel, headlined “Medical Mishaps and Criminal Prosecutions - Time for Reform?”, will hear from Dr Alexandra Mullock of University of Manchester School of Law, Dr Danielle Griffiths of University of Sussex School of Law, and Dr Eimear Spain of the Graduate Entry Medical School and School of Law at UL.
The third panel, “Insights into the Regulation of Error and the Role of Sanctions”, hears from Dr Anthony Breslin, vice president of the Medical Council; Patrick Leonard SC; and William Kennedy, director of regulation and legal advisor in professional standards at the Medical Council.
The final panel, “The Impact of Medical Mistakes”, hears from Melissa Redmond, external lead advisor for Patients for Patient Safety at the World Health Organisation; AndreĆ© Rochfort, director of doctor’s health at the Irish College of General Practitioners; and Dr Mary Tumelty of the Graduate Entry Medical School at UL.
